Like many of you, I watched the Globes last night, but I didn’t really care who took home a little statue. To me, the winners are decided on the red carpet, and my personal favorite makeup look of the night goes to (drum roll, please!) Marion Cotillard. Paired with sleek, simple hair, Cotillard’s fresh skin, flushed cheeks and defined eyes looked glam but totally natural, a tricky balance to pull off. I chatted with the Rust and Bone star’s makeup artist, Christophe Danchaud, and got the scoop on her look.
“The dress was Dior couture, and it was a very strong orange color, so we didn’t want to have too much makeup—we wanted something light,” says Danchaud. First, he applied a mix of Tarte Maracuja Miracle Foundation with Tarte Amazonian Clay BB Illuminating Moisturizer for glow-y, lit-from-within skin.
To make her eyes stand out, he filled in her brows with Tarte Amazonian Clay Waterproof Brow Pencil and applied Tarte Eye Shadow in Meow, a gold-ish copper hue, on the lids, inner corners, and along the bottom lash line. Then he layered on not one but three eyeliners (Tarte Skinny SmolderEyes Amazonian Clay Waterproof Liner in Amazonite Blue, Slate, and Onyx) and loads of mascara. “I wanted to create a color we haven’t seen before, so I did my own cooking to find something special,” Danchaud says. “If you look closely, you can see all of the colors shining through. It makes her eyes sparkle, so it’s very sexy.” At first, he says Cotillard was hesitant about the navy color, but “in the end, she loved it,” he says.
On the cheeks, he brushed on Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Blush in Dollface, a baby pink hue, then blended a dab of BB cream on top of her cheeks with his finger for a soft, dewy finish. He finished with Tarte LipSurgence Lip Tint in Charmed. “You can wear this look every day,” Danchaud says. “We both loved it.”
