They love rock ‘n’ roll—and beauty. Meet the dynamic duo that fused both passions into one music-inspired makeup brand.
Some people look to the runway for inspiration, but Gilles Kortzagadarian and Stephane Siboni look to the stage. These beauty industry veterans and self-professed “music fanatics” are the founders and masterminds behind the too-cool-for-school makeup brand ARDENCY INN. “Music artists use makeup as a way of expression; they manifest the spirit of their music into what they wear and how they wear it,” says Siboni. We caught up with Kortzagadarian and Siboni to get the scoop on the electrifying new brand. RENEE TRILIVAS
Why did you decide to create your own makeup brand?
SS: We wanted to combine our passion of makeup artistry and love of music into a brand that brings makeup within reach of not only music artists, but every woman. It’s all about demystifying artistry by creating high-performance products that are easy to use and designing stunning looks that anyone can easily recreate with few products and steps.
GK: There is really no such thing as perfection when it comes to beauty or artistry. It’s all about individuality, self-confidence, and not looking like you’re trying too hard. We find perfection in imperfection; we love the natural texture of skin, freckles, and smudged eyeliner. Like in fashion, less is sometimes more, and a single eye shadow can sometimes make a bigger statement than a rainbow.
Since they serve as the brand’s inspiration, what do you think is so alluring about female rock stars?
GK: Music artists are free, spontaneous, and empowered; they embody a true lifestyle. They don’t follow trends, they create them. The goal with our product line is to have pretty much every style, mood, and occasion covered: PUNKER products are edgy blacks inspired by the darkly rimmed eyes and fierce attitude of punk rockers. MODSTER products come in bright colors inspired by the Mod subculture of high fashion and all-night clubs. The AMERICANA collection is all about natural tones and was inspired by the multicultural heritage and free spirit of downtown New York.
What are some of your favorite products in the line?
SS: I love AMERICANA Custom Coverage Concentrate. Our product development team, led by Erin McCarthy, came up with a true innovation in complexion! While traditional foundations only offer one level of coverage, even when layering, AMERICANA Concentrate provides the exact amount of coverage you need, only where you need it.
GK: My personal favorite is MODSTER Long Play Supercharged Lip Color. The formula is truly unique because it combines high color-payoff with the comfort of a balm, and it’s really long-lasting. I love the super sleek, high-gloss metallic case with magnetic closure. This is understated luxury and speaks to the attention to detail that we put in every product development.
